Parent Interview:
How did you learn about myopia control for your children?
“I myself have a low prescription in both eyes. I didn’t need glasses until after graduate school because my prescription was very mild. On the contrary, my husband is a high myope (around a -8.00 prescription). So we were aware about myopia control and proactive in making sure our childrens’ prescription didn’t get too high.”
What type of activities do you children enjoy?
“My oldest daughter plays tennis and plays the viola. She enjoys math. My son plays baseball, and history is his favorite subject. My youngest does gymnastics, and english is her favorite subject.”
What type of myopia control are your children enrolled in?
“My oldest daughter is 16, and she started myopia control in 6th grade when she started to need glasses. She currently wears monthly-disposable soft multifocal lenses. However, she wants to switch to the daily-disposable soft lenses, because she finds that towards the end of the month, her lenses feel dryer and more uncomfortable to wear. My younger son uses the daily-disposable multifocal lenses and they seem to be more hygienic and comfortable. Back when she was first enrolled into the program, the doctors told me that the monthly lenses are more effective in controlling myopia (there were no good daily disposable options back then), but with newer technology, there is now no difference in effectiveness between the monthlies and dailies- so she wants to switch. The myopia control was effective and has slowed down her prescription from getting worse.”
“My son is 14, and he also started myopia control around 6th grade. Just like his sister, his prescription is well controlled and has only increased a little bit over the years.”
“My youngest child is 12 and has no prescription, while her older brother and sister already needed glasses when they were her age. We are hoping she doesn’t get any worse!”
What was the experience like for your children to learn how to use contact lenses?
“My daughter did not have any issues. My son took longer figuring out how to get them in, but once he got the hang of it, it was easy. Also, with daily-disposables he does not need to worry about cleaning the lenses.”
“Both my children are happy with their contact lenses, and they both wanted to do it over having to wear glasses. They all spend time on their computers and screens, but have not complained of dryness or eye strain.”
Parents on Ortho-K!
“I started using Ortho-K lenses about 6 years ago in my early 40s purely for vision correction, because I was having issues with regular contact lenses. My cousin suggested I look into Ortho-K lenses when I told her how my eyes would get dry and itchy during allergy season. Since you only wear these at night, it’s helped with the irritation I would get around allergy season.”
