1) How has Dr. Lo and the staff at East Bay Vision Center helped shape your experience with Ortho-K?

“Dr. Lo is very open to questions. She is good at helping you understand what is going on and making all the necessary adjustments.”

2) Please describe your transition into Ortho-K lenses at a young age. How did you first hear about it?
“My mom, who has a very high prescription, heard about how it is good for controlling nearsightedness when initiated at an early age. So I started in 4th grade, and I knew a couple friends who were doing it too. Because I was so young, it was hard to learn how to use the lenses and I remember thinking they were uncomfortable when I blink; but you wear them when you sleep so it’s not a problem at night. My mom had to help me put them in and takethem out at first. Then, I soon learned how to do it myself with enough practice.”

3) Personally, what benefits of Ortho-K are you happiest about?

“My vision has basically stayed the same since I got them. I’m super used to it now! It’s more weird for me to go to sleep not wearing them vs. wearing them.”

“I grew to like them a lot, because I played sports growing up and didn’t want to wear glasses or soft lenses during the day. I continue to wear the Ortho-K lenses even now, because I like not having to wear glasses. I plan to get LASIK eventually. I am aware that it is more difficult to get LASIK and have good results with a very high prescription, so I’m thankful my prescription isn’t very high.”

4) What would you tell someone younger who has been recommended Ortho-K treatment by their optometrist, but they are on-the-fence about committing to it?

“It’s definitely very helpful in the long term for controlling nearsightedness, especially if you start early. It’s very convenient, and you don’t need to wear glasses or worry about soft lenses. It’ll probably be rough in the beginning to get used to it, but you’ll get there!”
