Long hours in front of laptops, monitors, and phones can leave your eyes feeling tired before the workday is over. For East Bay tech workers, blurry vision during screen time may be a sign of digital eye strain, also called computer vision syndrome. While screens are a necessary part of modern work, persistent symptoms should not simply be ignored.
Your eyes work continuously to keep digital content clear. When you spend hours focusing at the same close distance, the focusing system can become fatigued. This can make it harder to shift your vision between your monitor, phone, paperwork, and objects across the room.
Screen use can also contribute to dry eye symptoms. People tend to blink less frequently or less completely while concentrating on digital devices. When the tear film becomes unstable, vision may temporarily blur and then clear again after blinking.
Computer vision syndrome can affect more than visual clarity. Common symptoms include:
• Blurry or fluctuating vision
• Dry, burning, or irritated eyes
• Headaches after prolonged computer use
• Difficulty refocusing from near to far
• Eye fatigue or heaviness after work
Symptoms may become more noticeable during deadline-heavy days, extended meetings, gaming, or other activities that involve prolonged near focus.
Small adjustments can reduce unnecessary visual stress. Position your main screen about an arm's length away and slightly below eye level. Minimize glare from nearby windows and overhead lights, and adjust your screen brightness so it matches the surrounding environment.
The 20-20-20 rule can also help. Every 20 minutes, look at something approximately 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. Brief distance breaks allow the focusing system to relax.
Remembering to blink fully and regularly can also improve comfort, especially if your eyes become dry during long periods of concentrated work.
Even a small uncorrected prescription can become noticeable after several hours of computer work. Glasses that work well for driving or general distance vision may also not provide the most comfortable viewing distance for a desk with multiple monitors.
During an eye exam, we can evaluate your vision, focusing ability, eye health, and specific workspace demands. Computer glasses or other professionally prescribed eyewear may be recommended to provide clearer, more comfortable vision at your usual working distance.
If blurry vision continues even after you take breaks, blink, or step away from your computer, it is worth scheduling an eye exam. Persistent changes can sometimes be related to dry eye, an outdated prescription, focusing difficulties, or another vision problem. At East Bay Vision Center Optometry, we can evaluate your symptoms and recommend options based on how you use your eyes throughout the day.
